ROBERT HOOPES DOWS

Robert Hoopes Dows

, DDS, born Jan. 22, 1953, died Jan. 24, 2013, at his home in Elkton, Maryland. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Joseph Dows, and his mother, Patricia Trimble Hoopes Dows. Robert was a graduate of Millington Central High School, Millington, Rhodes College, Memphis, and University of Tennessee College of Dentistry. He attended Harvard Medical School and received certification for implants and oral surgery. He attended many continuing education classes throughout his career in Connecticut, Florida and Texas. He practiced dentistry more than 35 years with most of his career in Elkton. He was a member of the American Dental Association. Robert was an avid golfer. He loved sports and played high school and college football. He also had a passion for music and politics. He is survived by his children, Robert H. Dows, Jr., Leah C. Dows, Rachel A. Dows; sisters, Anne (Wayne) Holzemer and Diana (Eddie) Burton of Memphis; brother David T. Dows of Columbia, Md.; aunts, Mary Ireland of Joppatowne and Peggy Weaver of Street, Md.; nieces Julia, Hannah and Alison, nephews Andrew and David, and many cousins and friends. Funeral service was held on Jan. 29 with burial in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Chestertown, Md. BETTY ERLINE HANCOCK EDWARDS

Betty Erline Hancock Edwards, 89, died Jan. 21, 2013 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, Miss. Erline was born on Oct. 24, 1923 in the Darden Community (Macedonia) of Union County to Isom and Berlin Sanderson Hancock. Mrs. Edwards graduated from Macedonia High School and later married Gaston Edwards, who died in l992. They lived most of their married life in the Shelby Forest Community of Millington, where she had a career with People’s State Bank. She was an active member of Shelby Forest Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. She had many cherished friends, loved her puppy, Patches, and enjoyed working in her yard. Her funeral service was held Jan. 24, 2013 at Shelby Forest Baptist Church in Millington with Bro. Chuck Fowler, Bro. Charles Timberlake, and Bro. Kelly Seely officiating. A private family burial will be held at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Millington. Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel, was entrusted with arrangements. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, W. A. Hancock (Dorothy), L. D. HELEN CORINNE ORMAN GRIFFIN

Helen Corinne Orman Griffin, 85, passed away at home on Jan. 26, 2013. She was born on June 11, 1927 in Trenton to Ivie Kenneth Orman and Elouth Gertrude Orman. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Earl Thomas Griffin, Sr. They were co-owners of the Firestone Dealers Store. Helen graduated from Munford High School in 1945. Her senior year she worked at Millington Telephone Company. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Ivie Gerald Orman. She is survived by her brother, William Jere (Tammy) Orman; three children, Helen Rebecca Parks, Earl Thomas (Janet) Griffin, Jr., and George Kenneth (Lorraine) Griffin; sisters-in-law, Lois Laverne Orman and Shirley Ann Mertens; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends that she loved dearly. Helen was a member of First Baptist Church in Millington and the Senior Citizens. Funeral was held Jan. 29 at the Millington Chapel. KENT LEE SANBORN

Kent Lee Sanborn, 73, of Millington, died Jan. 25, 2013. Mr. Sanborn was a retired Navy veteran, retired parachute rigger, member of First United Methodist Church in Millington, the Optimist Club, and involved with Shelby Youth Sports. He leaves his wife, Joan Teston Sanborn; sons, Kent L. Sanborn Jr. of Bartlett and Christopher K. Sanborn of Signal Mountain; sisters, Kathy Abbott of N. Springfield, Vertmont; brothers, Neal Sanborn of Springfield,  and Kurt Sanborn of Winterset, Texas; four grandchildren. A memorial service was held Jan. 30, at First United Methodist Church in Millington. Additional services will be held at Chapman Funeral Home in Brunswick, Ga. VIRGINIA B. SINK

Virginia B. Sink, 86, of Rosemark, passed away Jan. 22, 2013. She is survived by John M. Sink Jr, her husband of 69 years; daughters, Betty (Charles) Zoccola of Rosemark and Frances (Wes) Ebbs of Millington; sons, Eddie (Kathy) Sink of Arlington, and Jimmy (Connie) Sink of Amory, Miss.; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild. A service was held Jan. 24 at the Millington Chapel. Interment followed at New Salem Cemetery.
