The Brighton-Munford girls’ game Tuesday night in Brighton was pretty much a carbon copy of the game the teams played against one another two weeks ago in Munford.
A Brighton team missing multiple starters struggled to score and handle Munford’s pressure defense. The result was a 49-6 district win for Munford.
The Lady Cougars started the game on an 11-0 run thanks to a 3-pointer and seven points by Maiya Reed, who led all scorers with 15 points.
Brighton (2-8 overall, 0-6 District 13-AAA) got on the board with 1:49 left in the first quarter on a basket by Cassidy Johnson, who scored all six of Brighton’s points.
Munford finished off the first half on a 23-0 run. Ciara Spence (10 points), Shelby Kendrick and Riley Patterson each hit 3-pointers during the spurt. Brezia Cooper added 10 points for Munford, which rested its starters most of the second half.
With the win, Munford improved to 11-8 overall and 3-3 in district play. The Lady Cougars still have to play first-place Hardin County and Liberty in league play. If they sweep those two they will finish second, if not they be the third seed in the district tournament.
Brighton will play Liberty in the five-team district tournament play-in game.
Last Tuesday at home the Lady Cougars had a chance to beat second-place Dyer County before a terrible third quarter led to a 52-39 loss.
“We have to put four quarters together,” Munford coach Steve Poindexter said. “At this point we really haven’t done that against a good team.”
