The Munford Cougar Baseball team celebrated another signing today with Jacob Sawyers inking a letter of intent to play at Freed-Hardeman University.

Sawyers will join the Lions and play for veteran Head Coach Jonathan Estes. Estes was on hand at Munford High School for the signing ceremony today. Other coaches participating in the signing came from the Memphis Tigers organization and Cougar Baseball. Jacob had his parents Dawn and Jeff standing by his side as he signed the national letter of intent.

Munford Head Coach Jake Garbuzinski said Freed-Hardeman the Lions are getting a versatile player who can pitch, play in the outfield or infield and hit the ball. Sawyers helped the Cougars reach Regionals last year.

Meanwhile up the road at FHU, Estes led the Lions within one game of an NAIA Opening Round berth in 2014 after advancing deep into the program’s first ever AMC Conference Tournament. After dropping the opening game of the tournament, the Lions reeled off three consecutive wins while facing elimination before dropping their final game 4-2 to eighth ranked Missouri Baptist.

The Lions cracked the Top 25 in the first regular season poll and were ranked in all six regular season rankings. The Lions highest ranking came on April 3 after taking two of three games from No. 18 Bethel. The series win propelled the Lions into first place in the conference and No. 18 nationally.

Sawyers’ road to the nationally ranked FHU program started as a 4-year old in the Munford Dixie Youth league. Then he made stops with the Munford Red Birds and the Memphis Tigers before joining the Cougar program.
