NEWS ALERT: Warmer temperatures could reveal frozen pipes

Star Staff Reports

Customers are encouraged to prepare
As temperatures rise this weekend, frozen pipes that have burst will thaw and reveal leaks. Memphis Light, Gas and Water urges customers to prepare.
Customers are also asked to continue conserving water by doing things such as taking shorter showers, holding off on laundry, and not running the dishwasher until Monday at noon.
A Boil Water Advisory is also in effect until further notice as a precautionary measure. Low pressure in the water system and breaks in water mains could allow harmful bacteria to affect water quality. Read more here:
Reminders & Tips:
• Customers are encouraged to drip water, open cabinet doors, and insulate pipes while temperatures remain low.
• Read this article for tips on unfreezing pipes in the home:
• Locate the main shut off valve inside the home. It could be in a closet or under the sink.
• Cut off water at the street using a meter key. (These can be purchased at a hardware store.)
MLGW does consider burst pipes an emergency. Customers can call 528-4465 to have water turned off. However, depending on demand, it could take some time for crews to respond. MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 432,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.
